Welcome to Roatan Stone Carvings

Welcome to Roatan stone carvings. We specialise in bringing to the market stone carvings unique to Central America. All carvings are locally crafted both on Roatan and the mainland of Honduras. Carvings range in size from two inches high to four feet high. All of the carvings that we sell are modern. Some of the pieces have been so good that they look like archaeological artifacts.

The Roatan Stone Carvings web site was created to help local artisans sell their incredible stone art. We first discovered the artists reproducing small figurines which they sold to cruise ship visitors as ancient mayan carvings. Fortunately this was not the case as it is illegal to export artifacts from Honduras without the proper authorization from the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History.

One on One and group stone carving workshop

Haivng been asked about workshops I have decided that we will now offer a 1,3 & 5 day workshop for anyone or groups that wish to learn about and produce a stone carving themselves. At the moment this is a very informal offer and prices are $100, $250 & $399 respectivly. We provide all the tools and can provide a tool kit for anyone that wishes to purchase a set to use and then take away with them.

Workshop consists of:

What stones can be carved
How to choose a stone
Deciding what to carve
What tools to use
Basic techniques
Finishing work

The reason for different durations is based on how big, complex a stone carving you wish to make or getting lots of practice while you ahv a professional on hand to advise you. For further information please email us info@roatanstonecarvings.com

Creation and future of Roatan Stone Carvings

After a few months of buying one or two carvings for the house, we realized that the artists were creating statues that were quick and easy rather than works of art. We spent some time talking to them about the statues that have been found locally and how we would like to have some replicas for our home. Three weeks later they turned up with a two foot high and eighteen inches wide double sided carving that required four people to move it. As soon as we saw the statue we realised that with a little help they could earn more money from one statue than they had earnt the previous year.

Having been invovled with Shona carvings while I lived in Zimbabwe I decided it was time to put that knowledge to good use. With that in mind It is now our intention to build a co-operative workshop on Roatan for these artists which will provide literacy, health care and trade education; as well as teaching business skills to allow them to set up there own arts and crafts businesses.
