Stone Art |
||||
Stone Art - Unlike many islands in the Caribbean, Roatan has found itself as the poor relative of Honduras. As such we find ourselves in a situation where survival is the main daily activity, rather than the expression of emotion through art. Even though people are using their skills to feed their families the art can still be found if you look for it. Most of what you find is junk for tourists mainly cruise shippers; which is a situation that we are trying to change. To do this we first have to try and change the thinking of the tourists. Instead of buying a $20 piece of junk at each port buy a $50 locally made piece of craft (preferably stone art) at every other location. Tourists should also be looking for orginal pieces to take home, instead of the mass production nick-nacks. Dont get me wrong these play an important part in the local economies, but unless they come from a co-operative, chances are they are being produced for pennies and sold for 10's of dollars. Nothing wrong with commerce, I only wish to ensure that the artists are getting their fair share! New Competition for Roatan childrenWe are in the process of setting up a competition for everyone under the age of 18 to design a sculpture that will be carved out of locally quarried stone on Roatan. This piece of stone art will then be placed in the municipal gardens in the center of Coxen Hole; subject to the new majors permission of course. It is hoped that by encouraging the children to design a piece of stone art that they will be empowered to create other pieces of art, and to collectively design and produce art for their own local communities. If we are successful then it is my wish to expand the competition onto a national level.
